40 vs 50 Gallon Water Heater — Which Do I Need?
The honest answer: most Philly homes are fine with a 50 gallon. We sell more 50s than every other size combined. Here's how to know which one fits you.
Pick a 40 gallon if…
- 1–2 people in the house
- One bathroom
- Showers, not baths
- Dishwasher and washer rarely run during shower time
Pick a 50 gallon if…
- 2–4 people
- Two bathrooms
- Anyone takes baths
- You sometimes run laundry or dishes while someone showers
- You want a little buffer for guests
Pick a 75 gallon if…
- 4+ people
- Three or more bathrooms
- A soaker tub anywhere in the house
- Back-to-back morning showers are normal
⚠ If you're between 40 and 50, get the 50. The price difference is small and you'll never regret the extra capacity. Going the other way — undersizing — leads to cold-shower phone calls within a month.
