How to Shut Off Your Water Heater (Gas, Electric, Power Vent)

Knowing how to shut off your water heater is a five-minute skill that saves thousands in damage. Walk through it once with the lights on so you're not learning it at 2 AM.

Gas water heater

  • Find the gas control valve on the front of the tank (round dial with ON / PILOT / OFF)
  • Rotate to OFF — not PILOT
  • Then close the gas supply valve: yellow handle on the gas line above the unit, turn perpendicular to the pipe
  • Close the cold water valve on top of the tank (clockwise)

Electric water heater

  • Open your electrical panel
  • Find the double-pole breaker labeled Water Heater (usually 30 amp)
  • Flip it fully to OFF
  • Close the cold water valve on top of the tank

Power vent water heater

  • Same gas shutoff steps as a standard gas unit
  • Unplug the power cord — power vents have a 120V plug for the blower motor
  • Close the cold water valve on top of the tank
Power vents have BOTH gas and electric. You have to shut off both. Forgetting the electric leaves the blower trying to spin a dry system.

Want us to label your shutoffs?

Every install we do, we tag your gas, water, and electric shutoffs in plain English so the next emergency is a non-event.
