No Hot Water? Try These 8 Things Before You Call

Before you book a service call, walk through these eight checks. About a third of 'no hot water' calls we get are fixed by one of these — usually a tripped breaker or a pilot that blew out in a windy basement.

1. Check the breaker (electric units)

Open your panel. Find the double-pole breaker labeled Water Heater. If it's tripped, it'll sit between ON and OFF — flip it fully OFF, then back ON.

2. Check the pilot light (gas units)

Look through the small window at the base of the tank. If there's no flame, follow the relight instructions printed on the tank's label. If it won't stay lit, the thermocouple is likely bad.

3. Check the gas valve

Trace the gas line into the unit. There's a yellow or red handle valve — it should be parallel with the pipe (open). If it's perpendicular, someone shut your gas off.

4. Check the thermostat setting

Twist the temperature dial up to 120°F. If someone bumped it to 'Vacation' or the lowest setting, you'll get cold water until it climbs.

5. Hit the reset button (electric)

There's a small red button behind the upper access panel — the high-limit reset. Press it firmly. If it trips again within a day, the upper thermostat is failing.

6. Consider the age

If your tank is 10+ years old and suddenly stops working, it's at end-of-life. Repairs at that age usually buy you weeks, not years.

7. Think about water demand

Did you just run two showers, the dishwasher, and a laundry load back-to-back? A 40-gallon tank serving 4 people will run out. That's not a failure — it's capacity.

8. Check for a leak

Look at the floor around the tank. Any water? Stop here, shut it off, and call us. A leak that empties into the burner area becomes an emergency fast.

None of these fixed it?

We'll quote you a flat-rate replacement over the phone. No diagnostic fee, no surprises.
